If you are in
the Downtown Crossing area on a weekday around lunchtime, you will
notice that streets are alive with hungry nine-to-fivers and tourists
searching for a quick bite to eat. If you have a little extra time in
between filing your TPS reports or walking the Freedom Trail, and you're in
the mood for a delicious, unique sandwich, look no further than Chacarero. Started seven years ago from the humble beginnings of a
pushcart, Chilean native Juan Hurtado started selling “chacareros”. A
chacarero is a Chilean sandwich which is made from handmade flat bread,
chicken, steak (or both), steamed green beans, Muenster cheese, and
tomatoes. Avocado spread and a secret hot sauce are added to complete
this ingenious bundle of tastiness (extra hot is the only way to
order). Expect a line that extends nearly a full block between the
hours of twelve and two, but don’t worry, the line moves quickly as there
are only a few decisions to make when ordering. In warm weather there
are tables and benches outside, but if they are all taken, it’s a short
walk to the Common where you can enjoy the sandwich and get back to your
day. You’ll just have to remember to get in line a little bit earlier
the next day. Note: Chacarero has recently added a new
location at 26 Province Street. -Greg M. |
