Review
Usually when you think of great Italian food in Boston, you think of the
North End, but Stella shifts traditional thinking by bringing superb
Italian to the South End. True to its South End roots, Stella's
double dining rooms are hip and modern, with a minimalist decor.
Expect a bustling and jovial feel throughout, as the high ceilings and
open design carry the high spirits of fellow diners. Stella's menu
is full of traditional Italian fare and holds up to its promise of
offering "approachable" cuisine. We started with the Margarita
Pizza, which knocked our socks off
with its thin crust and perfect balance of light cheese and seasonings.
Next up we selected the Tagliatelle Bolognese and the Homemade Gnocchi.
Both were impeccable, earning our praises as some of the best Italian
plates we've ever had. The Gnocchi may just have topped the list,
as the pasta and cheese combination melted in our mouths. The wine
list is above par, offering both inexpensive and expensive options.
The Tiramisu and the Mini Cannolis also pleased for dessert.
Service was very good - pleasant but not intrusive, knowledgeable but
not pretentious. The price is really what makes Stella stand out,
as a dinner at some of the more costly North End spots may run twice as
much. Parking can be had with some luck or after some searching,
but Stella also offers up a valet for a reasonable price. Lastly, as
other diners are catching on to Stella's charm, we highly suggest
reservations for any night of the week.
