Review
Via Matta is a hip and sophisticated Italian dining establishment located in the Back Bays Park Plaza area. The dining room is a beautiful wide open space with cream white walls, hardwood floors, and decorated with discerning Italian artwork and sculptures. Another highlight of the decor is the rolling cheese carts where the chefs and servers prepare the bread plates and select appetizers, creating a very homey feel. However, keep in mind that the atmosphere is quite jovial and often gets a bit on the loud side. The menu offers a nice selection of authentic Italian dishes ranging from the staples to the adventurous. The wine list is limited strictly to Italian wines, but still manages to offers several reds and whites at varying price points. Our server recommended a 2003 Montefalco Rosso, a reasonably priced Sangiovese-Cabernet blend, which turned out to be outstanding. We were feeling adventurous to start, so we began our meals with the Crunchy Eggplant and the Antipasti de Mare, which was comprised of a variety of three raw Tuna selections. Both appetizers were very interestingly flavored not our favorites, but good nonetheless. For our entrees we went for the Tagliatelle alla Bolognese and the Pollo al Mattone. Both were spectacular in fact, I can honestly say that the crispy-and-juicy Pollo coupled with Swiss Chard was the best poultry entree I have ever had. Moving onto dessert, we were blown away by the Tiramisu and the Almond Canoli wed return just for the dessert. Service was top notch, as our server was pleasantly sociable and knowledgeable as to the menu and the wine list. We also left with the feeling that the staff really strive to take good care of their patrons- a quality which separates the good restaurants from the great. The price tag, while expensive, is actually on the cheaper side compared to other area Italian restaurants of similar quality. Free parking can be had in the Park Plaza area with a little bit of effort, but if you want to avoid the hassle Via Matta also offers up a valet service. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience here and will be sure to return soon. -Mike & Kim
